How to winter-proof your home against mould

Winter is coming – and that’s when we usually start to notice mould crop up in our homes.

Mould is a natural part of the environment, and it loves cold, dark, and damp places, making the cooler months a perfect breeding ground for mildew.

Mould spores can cause runny noses, congestion and hay-fever like symptoms so it’s important to minimise mould in your home to keep you – and your family – healthy.

Mould can occur due to a variety of reasons, including:

  • Lifestyle: cleanliness, over/under ventilating your home, and the use of appliances
  • Aspect: is your property north or south-facing? Do you have a ground-floor or top-floor unit? These factors can contribute to the creation of mould
  • Weather: heavy rain, cold weather and dust storms can cause mould
  • Water leakage

So, how can you prevent mould in your home?

  1. Use your bathroom exhaust fan: bathrooms are a prime location for mould, so using the exhaust fan is critical to stopping a mould outbreak. Switch the fan on while you shower and then leave it on to help remove moisture from the air.
  2. Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate: open a window or door while you cook, wash dishes or use your dryer to ensure a good circulation of air through your home.
  3. Invest in double glazing: if you’re a landlord/home owner, consider budgeting for double-glazed windows. Not only do they keep in heat better than single-pane windows, they also minimise condensation.
  4. Invest in energy-efficient heating: these systems are effective in keeping your house warm, are cheap to run and help stop mould from developing. Make sure you check the filters regularly and replace them if necessary.
  5. Clean your gutters: a blocked gutter can cause rainwater to back up, and look for the easiest way down – which could be into your home. Clear your gutters of leaves and dirt regularly to ensure they’re working properly.
  6. Check your roof: winter is a good time to do an annual visual check of your roof. If anything looks out of place, get it fixed.
  7. Insulate your pipes: temperatures in Mudgee can often drop below freezing, causing pipes to crack and burst. Insulating pipes (inside and out) will prevent any damage during the winter months.
  8. Check your window and door seals: air and damp can creep in through any cracks or gaps in your windows and doors. Make sure all the seals on your windows and doors are in good, working condition and fix any if required.
